There was no significant different content of free phenolic hydroxyl groups between CK and EMCC pulps, which suggested that higher bleachability of EMCC pulp was not simply related to the content of free phenolic hydroxyl groups, though free phenolic hydroxyl groups were believed to be the main and preferential site of attack by chlorine dioxide.
